Biographical history

George Francis (1932- ) is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Environment and Resource Studies at University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. Dr. Francis received BAs from University of Toronto and McGill University, an MA from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD from the University of Michigan. In 1970 he became the first chair of the Department of Environment and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo, retiring in 1996. Francis is particularly interested in the policy and governance implications associated with "ecosystem management". His interests over a number of years were directed towards the Great Lakes, the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program, and the UNESCO/UNEP International Environmental Education Program.
