Biographical history

Eberhard Wilhelm Schwantes (1929-2005) was a Lutheran pastor, serving Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church in Toronto, Ontario for 36 years.

Schwantes was born on July 18, 1929 in Regenwalde, Germany. In 1951, he immigrated to Canada, and in 1957 graduated from Waterloo College with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1959, Schwantes graduated from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity.

Pastor Schwantes was first called to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. On June 7, 1964 he was installed at Martin Luther Evangelical Church in Toronot, where he served until his retirement. In 2001, Pastor Schwantes received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit from the Government of Germany.

Pastor Schwantes passed away on his 76th birthday, July 18, 2005, in Toronto.
