History

The WLU Staff Association (WLUSA) represents the office, clerical, and technical employees of Wilfrid Laurier University on the Waterloo and Kitchener campuses. WLUSA was founded in the early 1970's as a social club. The organization evolved and its relationship with the University expanded to include salary and benefits negotiations, grievance procedures, and serving as the voice for staff in the University community. The decision was made to become an independent local union. WLUSA became a trade union on October 30, 1995 and on May 14, 1997 signed the first Collective Agreement with Wilfrid Laurier University. In 2002, negotiations for WLUSA's third Collective Agreement broke down, resulting in a legal strike from September 16 to November 5, 2002. In April of 2012 WLUSA ratified the jurisdiction of agreement with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).
