Biographical history

Henry Endress (1914-1981) was the Vice-President of Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University) from 1963-1969, also serving as acting President from 1966-1969. Previously, Endress served as a member of the Executive Council of the Lutheran Church in America, and was the Associate Director of the Lutheran Laymen’s Movement from 1946-1949.

Endress was born in Rosebank, Staten Island in 1914. He served as a Director of the Commission on Stewardship, a Director of Lutheran Film Associates, and was an Associate Producer for the motion picture Martin Luther (1953). As Vice-President of Waterloo Lutheran, Endress was responsible for University Resources, which included fundraising and public relations. While at Waterloo Lutheran, Endress was also a Member of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Religious Advisory Council.

Following his tenure at Waterloo Lutheran, Endress was named the Executive Director of the Lutheran Resources Commission in Washington, D.C, serving until his retirement in 1980. He then moved to California and joined the Vesper Society, a national consulting agency involved in health care, social welfare and religious education.

Endress died on September 27, 1981 in San Leandro, California at the age of 66.

The president and vice-chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University is appointed by the Board of Governors, following advice from the Senate. The president is the chief executive officer of the university and has supervision over, and direction of, the academic work and general administration of the university, the members of faculty, officers, employees and students thereof, and such other powers and duties as from time to time may be conferred upon or assigned to the president by the Board of Governors.
