Geography and Environmental Studies is a department of the Faculty of Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University. It offers a variety programs at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD level. It is home to several research centres and institutes, including the Cold Regions Research Centre, the Vissemann European Research Centre, the International Migration Research Centre, and the Laurier Institute for Water Science.
The department was officially organized in 1950, although geography courses have been taught at the institution since 1914. The Department of Geology, which was founded in 1937, changed its name to the Department of Geology and Geography in 1939. In 1963 the name changed to the Department of Geography and Planning, although it reverted back to the Department of Geography in 1969. In 1996 the department assumed its current name, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
