Administrative history

Though classes in business and economics have existed at Wilfrid Laurier University since the days of Waterloo College, the School of Business and Economics was not established formally until 1966. Formed at a time of an increased desire for professionalization in post secondary education, the School was thought to be a boon for a university continuing to grow in enrollment.

The first director of the School of Business and Economics was Herman Overgaard.

The School of Business launched an international business program and continuing education courses to enhance the breadth and scope of the School.

The School began offering a part time Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program in 1976 and has developed a portfolio of undergraduate and professional master's programs including various combined degrees, a double degree with the University of Waterloo and a PhD in Management.

The Laurier Toronto office has acted as a regional hub for the School of Business Office since 1999 and offers graduate level programs catered to working professionals.

Over the years, the School of Business and Economics has been home to a variety of research centres, in-residence positions and industry development institutes.

In 2015, the School of Business and Economics was renamed the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics following a major donation from Mike Lazaridis. In 2016, Lazaridis Hall - a new academic building, became the home of the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics.
