Sir Wilfrid Laurier collection

The collection consists of material about Wilfrid Laurier. Includes publications and correspondence created by Laurier, and material about Laurier.

The Sir Wilfrid Laurier collection contains correspondence, photographs, publications, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, and personal papers authored by, or pertaining to, Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919).

Series 1 contains correspondence from 1889-1891 between Laurier and Quebec journalist Ulric Barthe (1853-1921), who helped to compile Laurier’s book Wilfrid Laurier à la tribune (Wilfrid Laurier on the Platform) published in 1890.

Series 2 contains personal correspondence from 1878-1917 between Wilfrid Laurier and various people and organizations, including Sir Charles Fitzpatrick (1851-1942), Francis Robert Latchford (1856-1938), the Fergus News-Record, John Wentworth Russell (1879-1959), and Louis Jacob Breithaupt (1855–1939), among others.

Series 3 contains photographs of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Photographs include framed portraits, the unveiling of Laurier`s statue at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Laurier and his wife Zoe, and Laurier at various political rallies.

Series 4 contains various fire and life insurance policies pertaining to Wilfrid and Zoe Laurier.

Series 5 contains programs/announcements and invitations tendered to Wilfrid Laurier by the Toronto Board of Trade in 1897. Included is also an announcement of a solemn requiem high mass in Kitchener following Laurier`s death in 1919.

Series 6 contains broadsides and political pamphlets ranging from 1896 until 1921. These pamphlets and reports pertain to the record of the Liberal government during Laurier’s time as Prime Minister and contain information on finances, the Manitoba School Question, political pointers, the Union government, the “Great Northern Railway,” the Laurier tariff, the Canadian navy, manufacturing, and also contain tributes to Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

Series 7 contains memorabilia relating to Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s political career and includes campaign and convention ribbons, a commemorative medal, decorative plates, and postage stamps.

Series 8 contains various newspaper clippings, articles, and lectures written by or pertaining to Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The Series contains audio cassette tapes of a lecture given by Senator Gratton O’Leary entitled "Wilfrid Laurier as I Knew Him,” which he gave at Wilfrid Laurier University in 1973.
