Gerald Bales

This file contains material about Gerald Bates (1919-2002), a Canadian organist and composer. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Bales studied at the Toronto Conservatory of Music from 1936 to 1940, where his instructors included Herbert A. Fricker, Albert Procter, Leo Smith, and Healey Willan. In 1937 he gave his first professional organ concert at the Eaton Auditorium in Toronto.

From 1937 to 1971 he was organists and choirmaster various churches in Toronto, Calgary, and the United States. From 1971 to 1984, he was a faculty member at the University of Ottawa. As a composer, Bales produced over 120 works. In 1996, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada
