Scope and content

The subseries contains source material from the ELCC's President's Office relating to the Church's transition into the autonomous organization in 1967, independent from the American Lutheran Church. It includes correspondence, reports, promotional material and a film script dating from 1962 to 1967.

In 1961, the Canada District of the American Lutheran Church voted to establish an autonomous church- the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada. The autonomous Church was formed to allow the Church to manage its own affairs independently and to design programming specifically for Canadians. A convention was held in 1964, where Articles of Autonomy, a Constitution and a timeline were developed.
